i ❤ demo -- but cannot edit my profile?
in this thread, i'd like to evaluate the costs and benefits of these two options:
* amazon web services, simple storage service, reduced redundancy storage
* home-based file server, raid 10 or raid 6, 4TB capacity
i'll assume two years of use at an average of 2TB utilization.
i'll use some statistics, like in
this post to arrive at a conclusion.
more anon!

s3 rrs
$4800 for 2TB of storage for two years
free data transfer in (for now)
$1 for 100,000 requests
ESTIMATE: $4801
home-brew
$1200 for 4 WD RE4 2TB disks ($300 each)
$1440 for a 18/1 Mbps connection for two years ($60/m)
$154 for electricity ($0.093216/kWh, 94 W, 17531.6255 h)
ESTIMATE: $2794
-----
analysis needs to include:
risk of data loss
estimates of s3 data transfer and s3 data requests

yeah, but the disks will be faster. =P
you could do a more power effective approach for certain. but in general you can't beat the cost savings in consolidation. cloud makes sense.
=/
but only for backups. you don't want to be beholden to anyone with your important data.

oops, there's an extra 4 on the end. this is another ambien-induced thread.
WD RE drives have a 5 year warranty, so you can expect them to last at least this long. Not sure if you thought about this in your calculations.

Don't you need this anyway?
