I found this very useful for en and em dashes. and ellipses too.

for quick reference, en dash is option+-, em dash is option+shift+-, and ellipsis is option+;.

I love these :). one of my favorite little things about os x. in every other os the path of least resistance is going to the wikipedia article for dashes or ellipsis and copying and pasting.

+1 on that.

On my laptop I know have OpenSolaris with the gnome toolbar and some thingy where I can select characters which are then put into the clipboard.

It works, but I hate it. Best way I've found so far though. Also saves wikipedia some bandwidth ;)

that doesn't sound so bad. on windows there is undoubtedly some alt+four numbers combination that will do all of these, but I never remember after looking them up once a year. typing "w ellipsis" into my address bar is easier.
