i began merging this into trunk, but it doesn't seem to be mature. some things are not converted to the heredoc syntax.

what's the plan, db? should we make some rules for when we ought to use heredoc as opposed to echo()? or is the branch mature in your opinion, and should i go ahead with the code review and merge?
