Exactly. He writes all of his letters by hand. :D
He has a computer in his office that he checks email etc. with, but I don't know if he sends many out that way. I've never recieved an email from him, and I give him multiple stamps for his letters every afternoon.

many moons ago i was working as a developer for a grant involving distance education. since we worked closely with the education school and weren't jerks we occasionally did the oddball tech support job that the IT dept sucked at. usually we used some work study kids for this.
anyways one day this work study kid comes up to me and says... "hey you want a type writer?" and I'm like uhm... lemme see it? And he pops out this old with an e school spring loaded type writer.
I was like ... wow that's beautiful where did you find that?
And then he tells me a story that made me smile, and cry inside. One of the older professors in the school long since tenured apparently needed to check email... desperately. Not that he cared, but the rest of the dept was losing their mind with him habitually ignoring all email. So they sent him a brand new machine and asked one of our guys to set it up for him.
When the work study kid shows up... he sees this guy working at a type writer. So he asks where he should set the thing up. The guy says "put it in the closet with the others".
There are 3 other boxed up systems in his closet marking 3 prior generations of system roll outs at the school. He'd been having the new systems placed in a closet and just kept on with his type writer... for well over a decade. probably several.
The work study kid was literally just dumbfounded.
Needless to say he had a hell of a time convincing the guy to let him set the machine up for him. And he ended up effectively confiscating the professors type writer to ensure he stopped using it.
I ended up keeping the type writer for a few years.

Typewriters are wonderfully archaic. I think they're such romantic objects.

Well I gave it away. But, later on down the line I bought an old model 15 teletype off of ebay for a dollar. Paid about a hundred in shipping. It showed up in NYC sheared in half, and covered in a few decades of ink and god knows what.
So four of us took the thing completely apart and cleaned it up. My friend Adam went nuts and basically re-assembled the entire thing from scratch component by component repairing pieces that were smashed and or completely missing as he went.
Later on another friend Bill Ward setup the teletype to accept input from twitter and set it up at some art show at eyebeam in NYC.
But I did take one picture when bill was working on it one night... that I thought was fairly amazing. Basically someone ( I think my friend Zach ) made bill a piece to allow him to step the teletype through rotations manually. But he did it on a 3d printer he had built ( and largely designed ) himself. It was like this weird clash of old world engineering and new world engineering meeting.

The man who works at (owns?) the 7-11 across the street from my place remembered me coming in two nights ago in my pj bottoms to buy NyQuil.
