attention bloggers: i'm willing to create a third-generation winged leopard web log. this includes interested newcomers and all former members of wlwlv1 and wlwlv2 (located at
http://www.wingedleopard.net/ ).
the proposal: wlwlv3 can be whatever you want, however you want! there's only one rule: it cannot replicate the purpose of think tank forums. for example, anything like wlwlv2 is acceptable, and a format like wlwlv1 is acceptable
if we do not have the discussion forums. the idea is to recreate a mutual blogging experience. anything you want works: one page that all users post into, subject areas that all users post into, an individual page for each user, or a page for groups of members. use your imagination, propose an idea and a design.
i would like each proposal to include format ideas, and if possible, the actual web design (e.g.
http://www.wingedleopard.net/wlwlv2/images/draft-0.png ).
we will vote on our favorite, and assuming it has enough interest (at least a few users), i will code it all and get it online!
please post comments, suggestions, questions, dissent, insults, etc.

Well on the way to the unknown
"[...] one page that all users post into, subject areas that all users post into [...] "
Sounds like the ttf to me, or darn close to it. wlwlv1 was a nice format and let people speak. Maybe something similar, but without comments posting. We can use the ttf for that.
well that's not my rule. anyone can design it however they want.
the difference between a blog and a forum (in my opinion) is this: the start of a thread on ttf is meant to instigate discussion. alternatively, a blog entry is simply meant to update the reader on happenings in the blogger's life (and perhaps accept return comments).
ttf doesn't have many threads like:
SPACE HEATER "so i live in a cabin and i have to use a space heater. this thing blasts heat like mad. i'm scared of it lighting my room on fire."
EMO LOVE "so i'm totally in love with this girl and she ignores me, i'm so stuck!"
and it isn't intented to have these types of threads. that's why there's no "cabin" forum, no "emo love" forum, and no "your life" forum.
there's a reason why i actively post on both ttf and on www.wingedleopard.net/lucas/. tell me where those posts would fit in here. also, how would we use ttf for commenting on those posts? start a thread here for each of my blog posts? then why would i even have my blog if it's all on ttf as well? and ttf is not going to have personal posts like these on a consistent basis (my rule).

What about horizontal commenting? Instead of trailing down the page with stuff, the comments would be tiled to the right of the actual post. And original posts(ie, not comments) will be tiled downward.
I think two-dimensional posting needs to be explored further...
hahahah
usually anything that horizontally scrolls is a bad design.
but it sounds interesting, the page would just be this huge matrix of posts.
i can't imagine tracking changes on a matrix like that. for me it's hierarchical all the way. nest that shit!
thoughts on v3, db?
a big part of the mutual blog's success (as in v1) is dependant on all of the members' willingness to post some personal shit consistantly, which was just not happening in v2. i'm not sure i'm "in the same place" i was when wlwl v1 hit the web, as a result i probably won't be posting on it much (if at all) but you can be sure i'll check it every day (if not more often). the only thing i want to avoid is what happened to v2.
what ever happened with your idea for personal blogs with one consistant code base, each one being hosted by a seperate user? i think you could do that with folders (kind of like /lucas/) and just a lot of cross linking between the pages. it would be less dependant on the community as a whole, although it would lack the community spirit that made v1 so great in my mind.

lr: Why is horizontal scrolling such a bad idea? To sum up Scott McCloud, the webpage is an infinite canvas. I'm not saying implement my idea, I'm just thinking "Why not take advantage of such an idea?"
Of course, if not, oh well, c'est la vie.
> what ever happened with your idea for personal blogs with one consistant code base, each one being hosted by a seperate user?
well i have the code. anyone who wants it can have it! it looks like this:
http://www.wingedleopard.net/lucas/
with this backend:
http://www.wingedleopard.net/lucas/manage/
and of course, it is highly modifiable so you can make it look and feel however you like easily.

Don't Let Your Walls Down
i would actually like to have a blog of my own. would it be possible for you to give a hand and help me set one up?

comes outta nowhere
i think one problem with v2 was that it was more designed around short comments and responses by people than a personal journal. I think a blog format would be better if no one could comment on the entries so it was more your thoughts and experiences that you didn't have to discuss or defend, as opposed to ttf where everything is up for discussion.
chiken: sure, but it's not for the faint of heart. you need at least a basic knowledge of html, php, and mysql to get my scripts to work. if you're willing to learn about this shit, then i'll give you a hand with the scripts. otherwise, i'd recommend something like blogger.com.
i challenge you to propose ideas for wlwlv3!
make it happen!

I defy you to make wlwlv3 good!
