there are some serious problems with ttf's hosting that i'm starting to realize:
1. old php version: we're on some php4 version. this holds me back from using some newer php5 oo features. i also used str_ireplace in search.php, which exists in php5 but not in php4, so search.php broke. i wrote a workaround, but these are going to start to annoy me soon.
2. missing pecl extensions: i was ready to make the edit feature for ttf the other night, but the host doesn't have the pecl xdiff extension installed. so this held me back.
3. old mysql version: we are running mysql 4.0 instead of 4.1 or 5.*. this severely limits me. i started coding using subqueries, but i just discovered that mysql 4.0 doesn't support them. 4.0 also lacks utf-8 support. we need 4.1 for these features.
i think i'm going to try to find a host and make a move.
i'm seriously considering picking up a
256slice
i reserved a 256slice. if anyone wants in on this, let me know.
i'd like to run:
lighttpd 1.5.0
php 5.2.1
mysql 5.0.37
rails 1.2.2
svn 1.4.3
suggestions/comments?
i grabbed one.
256mb ram
10gb disk space
100gb monthly transfer
here's what i have running so far:
ubuntu 6.06
apache 2.0.55
php 5.1.2
mysql 5.0.22
i'll be getting ruby on rails and svn working as well soon. it's debatable whether the server will run an mta or not. i doubt anyone needs it. the server won't run a dns server, either.
if anyone would like to pitch in a couple bucks a month, you can have a nice little development (or production!) environment.

neat. why did you choose Ubuntu over something that seems more suited for a server like Debian?
documentation. i mean, it's not like it has x installed or anything

ah, I didn't know you could install it without X! cool.
did you ask slicehost about BSD? I'm just curious :).
nah, i didn't bother. it would be nice, though. linux really annoys me.
Let me talk to madams. . . we might be interested in paying a few bucks to get hosted.
i'm looking at a godaddy turbo ssl cert.
i wouldn't mind having one for svn (and maybe i'd get it issued for thinktankforums.com..!)
i suggested that they provide a bsd image for install:

i love slicehost! i hope you guys consider them if you ever need hosting!
also, if anyone wants hosted on our vps, please let me know! we have 10GB disk and 100GB transfer, nearly all of which is going unused. i can host you for free if i know you, and i'd accept small donations if you enjoy the service.
oh, a check is in the mail for hosting.

I don't know if it's slicehost or what, but ttf has been really really fast lately! it's great.

Same here, asemi. Faaaaaast.
for the "one line only!" thread, i get:
"page generated in 0.70566701889 seconds"
is that a lot of time or is that decent for 118 posts?
also, i think that time depends somewhat on the connection due to imperfect buffering, maybe not--prove me wrong!

have you compared it to godaddy? I remember seeing some cheap prices on there.
yeah, i guess godaddy doesn't have the best root CA. also, godaddy is more expensive.

yeah, I don't know shit about certificates and stuff and godaddy is usually wicked cheap on everything.
