i'm such an asshole anymore. i've talked down to people from three companies now. the only one i really like is slicehost.com (which is ttf's host).

here's part of a support request i just sent to dreamhost.com:

Every part of the web panel loads extremely slow, including this contact page, and the domain transfer page.

I _highly_ doubt it's our account, seems more like extremely high server loads.

Maybe you can put your main website www.dreamhost.com across the same servers that host panel.dreamhost.com so we can see what kind of service we'll be getting before we sign up.

so many of these hosts are terrible. :(

Dreamhost is awesome. I've moved all my sites there. It's wonderful. No complaints.

Panel isn't very fast, but meh. How often do you use it? I use it occasionally, and on freaking dialup, and I'm good.

if I ever want to outsource my hosting then I will definitely look into slicehost. mostly because of your recommendation and because ttf is so damn fast. I've also heard some terrible stories about big web hosting providers and experienced some terrible speeds on sites hosted by them. not to say this is indicative of every big web hosting provider, but slicehost just seems great!

Worst host I've ever used is OneWEbHosting. They will bitch at you for no reason.

Also, JaggiEnterprises' webhost is out of business, so I guess they don't count...

Yea it's pretty fuckin crazy man. Supposedly it was based off a linux kernel with a modified binary insertion, aka blob. Now it's a full blown server virtualization solution. Does Xen support 64-bit OS's? How does it compare to VMWARe. I'm using VMware Beat 2.0. All my VMs scream.

well xen actually has hypervisor... if you want to compare it to a vmware product the only thing it compares to is the ESX stuff (aka virtual infrastructure)... we use that stuff at work... and it knocks the socks off of xen in a whole bunch of ways. but xen is coming along and I am looking forward to it's future developements.

Yea and the fact that I can't run an unmodified 64-bit OS really blows ... :( Even VMWare Fusion Beat 2.0 is pretty fuckin screamin'. I run 3 RHEL VMs, a centos vm, and a windows VM, and it's still pretty nice.

my slice is used for mission critical production, so the web host has to be good enough for my extremely high standards.

example: dreamhost fails by my standards for a shared host. 1and1 also fails.

i demand extreme hardware, an extreme noc with intense physical security, and a team that really knows their shit well.

i've only found one shared host that has satisfied me: http://www.racksense.com/

Subject: Slicehost Notice: Emergency host reboot underway | www.wingedleopard.net | <143894> [1502]

Dear Slicehoster,

We have been alerted to a software issue on the host running your slice that will require a controlled reboot to correct. During this process, we will attempt to save the execution state of your slice to minimize the impact to slices, but your slice may need to be shutdown.

We will begin this process in just a moment, and apologize for the unplanned event. We are performing this immediately to prevent a more impacting issue in the near future.

I will update you as soon as all slices have been brought back online. Impact is expected to be under 10 minutes.

aws ec2 has reserved pricing.

a small instance costs $0.03 per hour with a one-year reservation fee of $227.50.

((24 * 365 * 0.03) + 227.50) / 12 = $40.86

so if you run an instance constantly for a year, it will cost $41 per month on average.

a three-year reservation is only $350.00.

((24 * 365 * 3 * 0.03) + 350) / (12 * 3) = 31.6222222

so if you run an instance constantly for three years, it will cost $32 per month on average.

---

by the way, a "small" instance isn't small relative to similarly-priced slicehost offerings.

1.7 GB memory
1 EC2 Compute Unit (1 virtual core with 1 EC2 Compute Unit)
160 GB instance storage (150 GB plus 10 GB root partition)
32-bit platform
I/O Performance: Moderate
API name: m1.small

I'm trying to remove my backup email address. I clear the field and click submit.

I get this error in response:
"Password must contain at least one number
Password must contain at least one upper case character
Password must contain at least one lower case character"

I don't want to change my password. I just want to clear my backup email address.

Hi there Jonathan,

Hello,

Please read my message again and respond accordingly.

Hi there Jonathan,

Like I said, for security reasons, password must now contain at least one number, one upper case character, and one lower case character. It sounds to me that your current password doesn't meet these requirements. If it does, then just type your current password into the new password box.

If that doesn't work, then I guess you will have to change your password. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

-Thomas
Slicehost Support

But I'm not trying to change my password. I'm just trying to remove my backup email address.

Lucas

My current password does meet those stated requirements.

I guess what I'm saying is that I consider the response a bug. If I'm only trying to alter my associated email addresses, it's confusing to have to set a "new" password, even if I enter my current password.

I humbly suggest that you change error handling on that script.

Hi there Lucas,

First, let me apologize for getting your name wrong in my past two emails. Really sorry about that.

Secondly, I realize that you are not trying to change your password. The thing is, you might end up having to change your password in order to remove your secondary email address. This is what I attempted to describe in my previous email.

As I said earlier, I'm really sorry about this inconvenience.

Secondly, I realize that you are not trying to change your password. The thing is, you might end up having to change your password in order to remove your secondary email address. This is what I attempted to describe in my previous email.

I realize that. I'm just suggesting that the form work in two separate fashions. If there is a change to the email addresses and both password fields are blank, then it should accept the changes to the email addresses and leave the password alone.

Don't you agree?

In other words, if your dev team has a lazy day, perhaps they could segment the case logic in the script.

Cheers,
Lucas

in this post above, i demonstrated that running an aws ec2 small instance for one year costs about $41/month, or running one for three years costs about $32/month.

aws just came out with a micro instance. running one non-stop costs about $15/month. if you pay a one-year reservation price, it costs about $10/month. if you pay a three-year reservation price, it costs about $7/month.

aws ec2 is finally cheaper than any vps provider!

i've just signed up for my free trial of google cloud platform: https://cloud.google.com/free/

you can run one f1-micro instance for free, "always". otherwise they cost $4.09 per month, with no reservation: https://cloud.google.com/compute/pricing

i'm going to cancel my digitalocean vps, and just use this instead

it seems a lot more convenient than aws. we use a bunch of amazon web services at work, and it's always such a pain to learn a service for the first time
