the patterns are the scrambles used prior to solving. U is for up, D = down, F = front, B = back, R = right, and L = left. it doesn't matter which color you use for each, but I usually have white facing up when I scramble, just for consistency's sake. the "2" after some of them means you turn that side twice. an apostrophe after it means you turn it counter-clockwise, and the plain old letters mean a clockwise turn. and when you scramble, you're supposed to start from a solved cube.
another great site is Dans Cube Station . this (F2L) is the method that I use to solve.
