i bought an x200s.
bsdlite bought an x200s.
fsmart bought an x200s.
my sister bought a t400.
my dad bought a t400.
i sold my t61 to dannyp.
i sold my x60s to dbrown.
/o/
I've got an X60s. :/
School have lots of R500s
i have converted two people in my life to the x army
me too. :D
I have a T61, and no converts to date :(
Seriously crappy Lenovo support also makes me kind of hesitant to sell Thinkpads to companies ... I usually go for HP, their laptops are not so good, but the support is much better.
I've got good experience with HP support as well. Not so with Lenovo.
the whole food security group at Michigan State has been issued R500s.
does ibm handle lenovo's international support?
because ibm does lenovo's u.s. support, and they've always been great to me.
I don't know who does support in the Netherlands / Europe, but they do a shit job at it.
And yeah, I've heard better stories from the states.
Just last week I had a customer with a T500 laptop, it was ~6 months old and totally dead. Phoned to Lenovo to request a RMA, I get told that I will be phones back. Two days later: Nothing. I phone again. I again get told I will get phones back. Day later: I get phoned back, the notebook will be picked up by TNT.
Total time taken: About a week.
Every single time I need to do some Lenovo RMA there is some crap attached to it. It's even worse than Apple. Did I ever tell you about my T61 I bought last year (The T61 before the one I own now). Man, it took me three fucking months to get the bloody thing repaired and had to put up with a shitload of nonsense.
HP procedure: I phone, get a RMA number, and it will get picked up the next day, or a part will be shipped, and HP ships *any* part for business laptops. Sometimes we do repairs ourselves if there is a lot of hurry or if the notebook is in such a bad/mishandled shape HP might decide it will void warranty (I've seen some pretty abused and gross laptops).
Lenovo, by teh way, won't ship me any parts.
For me, personally, I choose to have a better laptop and crappy service. If you are a business and need your laptop for work every day: I always tell customers to buy HP...

i got an x41t.
i've been looking at the x200. i WANT IT! there is not really anything on my mac that i use anymore that i cant just do in debian anymore. i spend all my time in emacs and a browser these days. i have a craving for using tiling window managers again. think i may buy one after the new year.
im on the x41t right now writing this and its a good laptop except the screen is too small (1024x768) and its just not bright enough.
any recommendations on the x200? i dont really care about the x200s. but what about with the LED vs LCD screens. i think i read here that the intel 2gb drive or whatever that thing is, is useless.
probably get the 3GB ram and 250gb 5400rpm.
maple

also, the t400s is probably the badest laptop ever, its just too expensive.
get the x200s for bonus battery life!
don't bother with 3gb ram. go to 4gb so you can dual-channel (which requires matching sticks). otherwise, stay at 2gb.
i think 5,400 rpm drives are nice to conserve battery life. but a 7,200 rpm drive will increase performance (potentially dramatically).
i got the high-res led-backlit screen (1440x900 and crazy bright). it's amazing except for the viewing angles. the viewing angles are terrible. i'm thinking about sending it in to replace to lcd--surely they all can't be this bad.
maple

actually, ill probably just get 2 gb. i dont need 3. i only have 2 in my mac and run way more shit on it than i would on the x200. wmii/emacs/firefox/mpd and thats about it. 2gb is plenty. i just get excited and think i need something when i really dont. :)
whoa i didnt know the screen was 1440x900 - i thought it was 1280x800. is 1440 on that small screen too much? or is it just that much more awesome?
sucks about the viewing angle.id like to hear how that turns out. if its just yours or just the standard deal.
> whoa i didnt know the screen was 1440x900 - i thought it was 1280x800.
there are both versions. the upgrade costs $150.

it's a little intense, but i definitely appreciate it.

im trying to decide between the 1440 and the 1280 so i was reading around -- just found this from someone else:
"I don't know the X200 screen but the one in my X200s (1440x900) is a bummer in a view angles category. Otherwise, it's a champion."
My only computer is my R51. Since last month there's a vertical line on my screen. :( Else, no complaints.
the x200s with 1440x900 is such a badass upgrade from the x60s with 1024x768.
here is a screenshot of the x200s with a 1024x768 box shown. so much more area! <3
just gotta figure out these viewing angles. then i'll be in pure love.

my new x200s is on the way!
4 gb ram. i think you will find it worth it. but 4 business day shipping? :(
well i was going to upgrade to 4gb myself regardless. it's just that the lenovo upgrade is only $50 after the discount, and if they do it, then accidental protection will cover the part. the cheapest i can find a 2gb stick of ram is like $45.
i guess they read my feedback form. all they do is 4-business-day shipping. yours will be too.
Dear Customer Service,
I have been told by a colleague who purchased a thinkpad from you and used the free 2-day shipping option, that you instead shipped it with 4 day shipping. This is obviously a breach of the explicit arrangement between buyer and seller. Under normal circumstances such a mistake would not warrant any more attention than that of annoyance. However, due to traveling and holiday deadlines, such a mistake would result in great inconvenience.
I trust that as my order is expected to ship out tomorrow (the 22nd) with 2-day shipping, that it will arrive on time.
Thank you for your consideration,
Francis Smart
we'll see
haha
they ship via
ups worldwide expedited. which can be a two-day service, if shipping from canada. but they ship from asia, so it's a four-day service.
ups worldwide saver would fit the bill.
right grrr, we'll see
i updated my original post. i've passed on two of my thinkpads!
bluet, dbrown: because your x60s uses a 4:3 12.1" screen, you can install the boe-hydis hv121p01 which is an sxga+ (1400×1050) aafs lcd screen with amazing viewing angles. it's the highest-resolution aafs screen for that form factor. that resolution kicks the shit out of wxga+ (1440×900), which is the highest available on the x200/x200s/x200t.
get on it!
the only bummer is that it costs $250. but damn that's an amazing screen. i'd consider getting an x60s just to have that screen.

this may be a weird request but could someone with the x200 with 1440x900 take a picture of their computer up close so i could just see what the resolution looks like on such a small monitor. i would love to have the 1440, but i dont want it to be too tiny on that 12". there is no retail outlets for me to check them out myself anywhere near me.
i guess it doesnt really matter as i can always blow the text up to whatever size i need. i have great vision but now that im pushing 30 i like having larger text than i used too.
anyway, if anyone can pull that off i would appreciate it.

looks like lenovo is stiffing me. their sales department is a nightmare. after waiting like 15 minutes the sales guy told me that they do have 2-day shipping but that ups doesn't ship on thursday and saturday. i verified that was a lie within thirty seconds by calling up ups but then i had to wait on the phone another 15 minutes before i could talk with a sales person who told me then that no manager was available to talk to me but that a manager could call me back. we'll see...
hmmm...they haven't called me back yet. i talked with a sony sales rep and they said i could purchase a

they say they will give me 10% off and free 2 year extended service plan upgrade. less power than the x200s but 1.6 lbs and has similar life to that of the x200s
you'd be seriously disappointed with that processor.
Intel Atom Z550: 2.00 GHz, 512 KB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB
Intel Core 2 Duo SL9400: 1.86 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 1066 MHz FSB
that's twelve times the L2 cache. the SL9400 has two cores at 1.86 GHz and 6 MB of L2. i wouldn't want to run stata or r on that vaio. the x200s would kill that vaio computationally.

the SL9400 has ten times as many transistors as the Z550. :)

Why so mad at lenovo? If shipping from Asia it takes 4 days, and UPS has thursday through saturday off, I don't see what part of this is Lenovo's fault...?
but that is just the thing. ups does ship on thursday and saturday. the reason why lenovo told me that they didn't because they actually shipped it 4 day and they thought it would be easier pretending that it was UPS's fault.
what a waste of time. it seems their customer support number is more of a customer handling number.
anyways, tomorrow i am going to stop caring. really, what is an extra 4 days anyways?

not on this thursday (if the delivery wasn't arranged by today) or saturday (if lenovo doesn't pay for regular ups saturday pickup).

if they scheduled the shipment by today, then they could have indeed shipped it tomorrow. i suspect that lenovo doesn't pay for ups saturday pickup.

I'm confirming with the guy that it still fits with the WXGA+ monitor on the x200s as there is probably a reason that lenovo doesnt do it.

dude the displayport and esata really make that laptop for me. i've always hated that the x series doesn't have a digital video out. esata would be nice too for ultra-fast external storage. optical is handy.
ridiculous features include the multi-touch display and the web camera (albeit essential for you).
the x series still beats it on size and battery life. but it's a good compromise.

yeah yeah, the S is definitely the key. i wouldnt have got just the 400.
didnt get the multi touch display (only for tablets). but it does have the multi touch-touchpad, which i doubt ill use. i wont use the video out ever, and probably never use the esata. althought the powered usb port is nice. really slim for a t series [1]. more power. same price. the drive sucks though, but i dont care right now. ill put a sata in it if i keep it. ill use it for a bit, if its too big ill get the x200s and sell this one at least for what i bought it (hopefully more). im hoping im just totally sold on it when i get it.
there is just something about the x series. especially now with the widescreen and the fullsize keyboard.

do you know what the multi-touch touchpad supports? it looks like they made the touchpad a little bit bigger for it, which is good. the two-finger scrolling on os x is so crucial. I hate having to reach for the keyboard while browsing the web. three-finger back/forward gestures are nice too. and customizable four-finger gestures are slightly useful but not really.

just got the x200s: my take (caveat: first time tp owner)
issues:
1. screen angles: the top and bottom viewing angles are a little bad but frankly i would not have even noticed them if lucas had not pointed it out.
2. lcd flexibility does worry me a bit. i don't know if too much play in the screen will lead to long term degeneration.
3. the flex in the body is easily reproducible if not as pronounced as what it appears in the videa. it does not concern me.
4. i want to install debian but it does not appear as easy as i had hoped. i need to get this machine working for me today.
pros:
1. the full sized keyboard is fantastic. i mean, really! i have been using compressed keyboards for so long that i forgot that i was even using them.
2. i am so happy never to have to deal with with another fickle touchpad again.
3. some people talked about how the resolution of the screen was too much. i don't find that to be the case at all. i can comfortably sit a normal distance from the screen while the screen is set to normal resolution.
4. i was a little concerned that the stock wireless card would be a little wuss. so far i am surprisingly happy with it.
5. software: i am very happy that the computer didn't come loaded down with usless programs that i would have to spend hours tracking down and removing.
untested virtues:
1. battery life
2. ability to read the screen in daylight. lucas said his screen was uncomfortably bright at the most intense setting. that must be at night because indoors with the sun shining outside the screen does not appear to bright at all. brightest setting seems just right.
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
when i first purchased mine, i was getting intermittent lockups. although it's hard to be certain, i narrowed the issue down to the battery. so, i called the lenovo help center and they overnighted me a replacement. so far, no freezes: inconclusive, but suggestive. regardless, i am quite impressed and satisfied with the support i received.
one thing i would/will do differently in the future: when ordering a laptop that already boasts long battery life, i won't upgrade the battery. the 9-cell on this thing nearly doubles the weight and changes the form factor in an inconvenient way. i can't recall more than a handful of situations that have occurred in my life where the benefit of having an extra 2 hours of battery life would be anywhere near the cost of toting around those 3 extra cells. however, this is preference and, of course, ymmv.
having said that: i wonder if there's some way to switch my 9-cell for a 6-cell with someone in bozeman.
i have been doing some autohotkey cutom keyboard mapping to improve the responsiveness of my x200s. currently i have:
1. control browser forward/back navigating between tabs in firefox
2. alt right sending end and alt left sending home
3. alt up/down sending page up and page down
i don't know what you guys use but i can post my x200s custom layout if you are interested.
bsdlite: the added battery life is worth the extra cost, volume, and mass. if i had a 6-cell, i'd gladly trade you.
likewise. this battery is amazing. i am so glad i have it.

well the t400 looks pretty damn sweet. if you don't highly value the extra battery life than the difference in weight between the x200s with the 9-cell and the t400 is only .6 lb. plus you get an optical drive and the additional power. the only thing that you might want that you are not getting is the bigger hard drive and the extended warranty. but hard drives are cheap and i am sure you could purchase the extended warranty if you wanted it.

I kind of hate optical drives too, and wish they would go away, but they're still convenient for stuff like playing DVDs, installing operating systems, ripping music, etc.
granted we are moving away from physical media to streaming stuff, I don't install operating systems all that often, and I don't think I've ripped a cd for over a year.
the lack of one still irks me because I am imagining being in a situation, however unlikely, where one would be beneficial to have and I am away from home without an external one. plus I just hate superfluous external peripherals. for this stupid reason, I think I like the x301 better.
not to mention the 1440x900 res :).

my mbp is still on my desk :). the only positive things about the mbp are the trackpad and the battery life. otherwise the thinkpad has it beat on the keyboard, screen resolution, and weight/size. I hate computers.
mbp wins on battery life?! are you sure?

os x vs. ubuntu, os x wins for sure. maybe if I put windows on the x301 it would last longer.

apple itself is definitely sucking but osx is still the best option.
windows is crap. linux is garbage. openbsd rules but hardware support and some modern features to use as a real desktop are missing.
osx you get decent consistent interface (albiet shitty keyboard control, but im always in emacs anyway), good third party apps, great for development in pretty much anything, stable, quick enough, use most unix tools, etc. its not amazing but its the best option available for me right now really. obviously depends on what you use your computer to do. whats better than that? linux is just getting dumber for the lowest common denominator. whats a real nerd supposed to use these days?
> quick enough
:p
has it gotten better?
maple
i like large datasets
well i say quick enough. i dont ever have to wait on it. but i usually only use emacs, safari (for normal browsing), firefox (development and getting around chinese firewall via ssh proxy), skype and itunes. sometimes terminal but i usually just use `shell` in emacs. random photoshop startup as well (should use something way lighter for the stuff i do). so i could probably do my work on a 1ghz pentium. i basically just browse and code.
thats about it - i dont play games on here (although i did start playing games again in china - for another post though).
i have the cheapest macbook pro 13". 2gb ram. runs perfect. long battery and the absolute best suspend/resume ive ever used (and has always been the case with my macbooks, probably had 10 or so), which i use about 30 times a day.
with all that said. i do miss mpd, tiling window managers, real package management, and all the fiddly bits of a real unix.
maple

i would love an x200 or something like that but only windows supports it worth a shit and i couldn't handle that.
does anyone run unix here anymore on a decent laptop? being in the home of lenovo (same city as me) i figured i could get an x61s somewhere but they seem to only have the newest shit here. i dont really like any other laptops than lenovo and mac anymore, but i havent been looking i guess.

I have had operating system indecision lately too. I'm very happy with ubuntu, but I want to use something other than gnome, like wmii or openbox. I tried debian but the docs were so awful I couldn't handle it. I would try gentoo but I like binary package management too much. so I'm just sticking with ubuntu/gnome for now. it works great on my x301. I don't think anything is flaky or weird at all. sleep/suspend works great, battery life is passable, etc.
I would use a bsd if I could, but I can't really live without flash support for watching tv shows on the web and stuff.
I wouldn't mind using os x again, but my macbook feels like it weighs a hundred pounds after getting used to the x301, and the keyboard feels absolutely awful.
I'd like to use a linux distro that is functionally equivalent to ubuntu (full hardware support) but without all the pre-installed software, because I don't use well over half of it. all I really need in the way of gui applications is a web browser. for im and email I've been using irssi and mutt, and I'm very happy with both of them.

nice to hear about the x301. anything that doesnt work on it? anything you wish was better or are you totally satisfied with it?
try archlinux. i think it fully supports the 301 without much work. spend a few hours setting it up as opposed to none on ubuntu, but you dont get all the shit with it.

ok -- i think im coming back. i almost bought one about 10 minutes ago but decided to do a bit more research
im in china so the models are a bit different but here is what it is
x201i (the i is for the i3 chip not the i5 -- big savings but i dont really have a choice if i wanted i5)
2gb
250gb
everything else pretty standard. have a choice between one with a 2mp camera or one with bluetooth (or one with both and a bigger HD and fingerprint reader for way more money).
i think ill do the camera one since i talk with people back home a ton. only bluetooth thing i have is a mouse and i can always get a little usb bt thing if i want it.
its like exactly $1000 US -- thats after haggling a bunch. thats more expensive than back home by quite a bit i think. but with the savings of going from i5 to i3 its about the same i think (could be wrong) but i dont use lots of processor power anyway.
also, for about the same price i could get the x200 that has the BT and Camera, Mem & HD is the same, but the other processor. figure ill just get the x201i because its newer.
anyone running linux/bsd on an x200/201 as their full time machine? anything i should know?

DO IT
the x200s is great as it is.
i'd love to get an x220 because it has these exceptional differences:
- ips display
- display port and vga port
fuck it. i bought an x220. student pricing with a black friday coupon:
ThinkPad X220
Intel Core i5-2520M Processor (2.5GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)
12.5" (1366x768) IPS LED Backlit Display
4 GB DDR3 - 1333MHz (1 DIMM)
720p HD Camera
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
ThinkPad Battery 29++ (9 cell)
Bluetooth 3.0
ThinkPad b/g/n
3YR Onsite Warranty Upgrade
$923 total
typically, i simply choose the least expensive processor available for the model. this time, i chose the i5-520M because it was the least expensive with all of the features (vPro, VT-d, Trusted Execution, AES New Instructions). i skipped the SSD upgrade because i'll do it myself with a better drive for less money, naturally. based on my thinkpad experiences (6 years and counting), i think a 3 year warranty is optimal for me. on-site 3 year only cost $5 more than depot 3 year.
now, if anyone wants to buy my x200s for $400 at the end of the year--let me know! i need to get a bit more warranty work done on it first.

mine is in great condition. i just need lenovo to give me a new lcd (again--this one has a 2x3 pixel area of slight darkness) and a new hinge (i tried to tighten it and the fucking screw head came off). otherwise, it's in great shape. it has a relatively new keyboard (i broke a key cleaning the old one) and motherboard (the old fan was dying, and they replaced the whole unit), as well.
i got the x220 today. i added the intel 311 20gb ssd msata card. i installed windows xp kn x86 on the 20gb ssd. i'll use the 320gb hitachi hdd for media. this configuration boots fast and also has a huge hdd. win-win?

absolutely. it's been almost two years and I am confident it will be at least few more before I replace it, hopefully with a t4**s.
i am very happy with my x200s. it is two years now and my battery life is still great, no problems with my system despite a toss-in-the-backpack-and-run lifestyle in which i almost never go anywhere without my laptop. i keep looking into upgrading my system especially because i have an annual budget of $1000 for equipment from my job, yet my x200s does not seem much worse than the x220 except that the x220 is much less expensive than the $1250 I originally spent on the x200.
if you didn't see the specs on the x220 i bought, look
here.
i think the resolution is lower than your x220s, but the screen has great viewing angles and color reproduction. computing power is better, battery life is approximately the same, it keeps the vga output but adds a displayport (digital) output.
the addition of the touchpad is nice for when other people want to use your laptop.
>the addition of the touchpad is nice for when other people want to use your laptop.

i just can't imagine turning in my x200s for a slightly faster x200 with a touchpad with a lower resolution. already i almost entirely use remote desktop with much faster computers for all of my data processing needs. the screen on the x200s has never bothered me.
i think better viewing angles is a difference you appreciate after you have it. but yeah, loss of resolution is a bummer.

I'll say it again: everyone who has ever typed on my thinkpad has commented positively upon the keyboard. I'd like to try another chiclet keyboard on a thinkpad (maybe the t series ones are OK??), but probably less than 1% of me thinks I'll prefer it or even consider it equivalent.
when you get used to the mbp chiclets you can type pretty quickly on them, but I find it extremely uncomfortable to do so. I feel like I have to contort my hands in some unnatural way to pose them correctly over the keyboard. I guess it probably also matters whether you touch type. relatedly, the awful keyboards apple sells for desktops now are the worst (very similar to mbp).
I need to order a replacement keyboard for my x301. a few keys are missing those little tabs now and tend to rock back and forth (escape and \, so it's not unbearable unless I'm typing a lot of unc paths or using vim). plus it's a little bit gross.

same as nny, here. i love my x220, but i haven't handled anything beyond that.
do you think the build quality of the x220 is inferior to the x60 or on par?
on par.

go ssd and go big on ram. also the extended battery is nice.
i put these in my x220:
intel 311 msata 20gb slc ssd ($120 on
newegg) [os drive]
sandisk extreme 2.5" sata 240gb mlc ssd ($190 on
newegg) [programs, data]
solid combo.

it sounds like we all have almost identical setups. x301 with 8 gb of ram and an ssd and a 6-cell battery (which is actually great because with the 3-cell the laptop has that stupid tapered look of a netbook that's half battery).

just ordered x230t i5-3320M, looked like getting the tablet option would only cost an extra $200. will swap out the hard drive for my ssd most likely when it arrives.

I hope that Lenovo will release a high res display.
high res? i think the x230, if you select premium display, the description reads: "FHD/Premium – Indicates 1900x1080 maximum resolution display". i am not sure if I could handle a 12.5" screen with that much resolution.
Fsmart: Where can you get that x230? Not from Lenovo, it seems.
maybe I am misreading something with the display.
anyways, right now I am annoyed with lenovo for setting my shipping date back a week. now my computer is flying to a different state then the one I will be located in. in addition, the sales department is completely useless.

this was a one off from some guy in huntington beach CA. turned out to be in perfect condition with an extended cell battery also in perfect condition. Which was an unexpected bonus. I would consider this to be an exceptional luck find on ebay in that regard.
but i could find out he re-upped to the new model during black friday sales... his browser history showed that.
=P
the x220 was just supplanted by the x230... so the 220s are showing up cheap like but still solid machines.

I got my T430s. The display is shit but the build is great. I think I may have fried it though with some shitty RAM DIMMS. The laptop registers when it's charging, but if I hit power, nothing happens. I have some RAM coming in today. Hopefully that will solve it. If not ... RMA time. :(

I thought ttf might appreciate my
torn down x301
the fan started making an awful high pitched whine and using compressed air just made it stop working altogether until I gave it a little push. so I replaced it with a refurbished one from ebay. it is a real wonderful thing to take apart, and I barely looked at the directions. it's probably running a bit cooler now with some fresh thermal paste too. hooray for thinkpads!
Hah, I like how you arranged the screws :)

I hate debugging BSODs. I was getting them about twice a month on Windows 7 and I never bothered figuring out exactly what it was. I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 recently and I'm still getting weird USB device not recognized messages (I think the webcam is fucked) but no BSODs so far. 7 was also hanging pretty frequently when resuming from hibernation and I haven't seen that yet on 8.1.

soooo I know we all know this, but new thinkpads suck. I just unboxed a t440 for a work customer and I was kinda psyched on the form factor. I compared it to my x301 and it's almost exactly the same size. except the display is lower res (1366x768 vs. 1440x900), new chiclet keys, and no optical drive bay. I kind of hate the clickpad too, though I could get used to it. I think the only thing it has on the x301 is speed (obv) and usb 3. fuck you, lenovo.
yeah, fuck them. the mac is kinda the last good laptop? too bad their keyboard isn't better.
My employer gave me a Dell XPS 13 "developer edition".
It's cool because it's very light, and that it comes pre-installed with Ubuntu; You cna actually go to the Dell website and download drivers. Shocking. I don't really like Ubuntu, though. I still can't get the fucking sound to work outside of the default Ubuntu UI (sound stops working with my own PekWM window manager). Argh.
It's uncool, mostly because it suffers from the "usual problems" that almost all laptops seem to suffer from: crappy keyboard, and glossy screen (to be fair, it's a nice screen, but glossy). In addition, it only has a Displayport and 2 USB ports, that's it (ie. no ethernet).
I just discovered it has a touchscreen by accidentally touching the screen. Why does anyone think that a touchscreen is a useful thing to have on a laptop...?

I don't imagine most people would need an ethernet port on their laptop. I think I've used the one on mine maybe twice... but both would have been for router maintenance.

I couldn't live without gigabit ethernet. you're probably right that most people don't need it though.
how's the 1920 res on that xps 13? I think I used 1920 on a 12-inch display once and it was too intense.
I like ethernet because of the consistent stability, and ease of setup.
> how's the 1920 res on that xps 13? I think I used 1920 on a 12-inch display once and it was
> too intense.
I need to zoom everything. Maybe I can configure Xorg to use a larger font by default, somehow. It's complicated by the fact that I connect it to a 22" 1920x1080 screen, where I would like it to be *slightly* larger, while on the laptop screen, I would like it *a lot* larger.
Maybe I'll just set a lower resolution...
btw:
http://superuser.com/questions/726648/whats-t … n-my-4-key
Why did Dell include a Rupee key on my keyboard :-/ ?
perhaps cost cutting to sell same layout into both europe and india... they are now owned by private equity
I would buy it.

I didn't know who else to tell so I thought I'd tell ttf about my new thinkpad! I got an x220 on eBay for like $200 a couple of months ago. it was kinda fucked and had clearly been dropped or seriously abused at some point but worked fine. I replaced the LCD with an IPS one (version 3 or whatever of the part number) and it blew my mind. so I just bought another x220 (i7) that's in much better shape from a coworker, popped the IPS panel in, and I'm loving it.
my x301 had a couple of cracks and was starting to feel a bit sluggish. I miss the form factor a bit (a lot; it will always be my favorite laptop like pedro martinez will always be my favorite pitcher) but the x220 is pretty damn good.
I also still have the weird habit I talked about in this thread of pointing with the touchpad and clicking with the trackpoint buttons.
I compared the IPS to dagr8gatzby's little macbook recently (same res, 1366x768) and it's not quite as bright but stands up pretty well nonetheless. and having a 7-row keyboard with stuff like an insert key is nice.
also reading this thread has me wanting to install xubuntu or something (I've been on windows 7 for as long as I can remember).
anyway, hi ttf! lucas, you should fix those php errors.
fixed. :)
My x220 has the IPS panel, max memory, the best SSDs, and it's still a great computer four years after it was made.
I'm using my girlfriend's MacBook Pro at the moment, and my God, these these things are fucking terrible.

lol
I kinda love it tbh
nny: oh, nycresistor? have any for sale? :]
I have a new Dell XPS thing now from work. The webcam is below the screen (instead of above it) and gives you an excellent view of the inside of your nostrils.
It also comes with this nVidia thing that I can't get to work on Linux :-/ I'm using the Intel stuff which is more than fast enough, but the battery life is like ~4/5 hours, which is not that long for a modern laptop IMHO...
Oh, and the super-HD 4000x2000 (or whatever) screen is just annoying. Everything is so small... I just set it to 1920x1080.
I got too fed up with the XPS15 and got a X270. I'm Thinkpad cool again!
Carpetsmoker: were there other things then the ones you mention above that annoyed you?
i'm considering an xps15, mostly because of its nvidia graphics and high resolution touch screen. the keyboard doesn't look particularly good, though, and of course it lacks the pointing stick in the middle of the keyboard i never use webcams. it seems that it can be charged through its usb c port -- pretty convenient
the thinkpad p51 looks good to me, but it's quite expensive. also, it comes with nvidia quadro, which doesn't justify its price increase from an nvidia geforce to me
i use an 11" macbook air now, which i bring everywhere without its charger, since it's so light and the battery lasts long enough. when i've gotten somewhere and use it, though, i often wish i had more of everything: screen, resolution, cpu cores, ram, graphics, mass storage, ...
i went to configure an xps15 now
- it only supports up to 32 GB of ram :/
- its only wifi option is "Killer 1535 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1" :\
i think i'll wait another year :p
thanks for reading my blog
Yes, quite a few things actuallly bluet:
- The screen kept flickering; every ~30 mins it would dip in brightness for a second and then go back up.
- I never got suspend/resume to work well.
- I could never get the fans to stop running loudly! I tried all sorts of power management settings, locking the CPU to 800mhz, etc. but it would always make noise even on the lightest activity.
I literally haven't used the XPS15 in months; it's collecting dust. Instead, I've been using my Lenovo N22 Chromebook, which works pretty well, but is also very limited (which is to be expected for £100). Hence the X270.
I had a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition at my previous job, which came pre-installed with Ubuntu. I installed Arch Linux on it and that worked pretty well! Maybe I just had bad luck with this particular model of XPS15? Dunno... Could also be it works better now with Linux or BIOS updates. It's been well over half a year since I tried to do anything with it.
> the keyboard doesn't look particularly good, though
It's acceptable IMHO. It's not great, but beter than most. Not as good as Thinkpad.
Lack of dedicated buttons on touchpad is also a major PITA IMHO, but this is near-universal now unfortunatly :-(
> - it only supports up to 32 GB of ram :/
:-/ How much memory does one need?!
> i use an 11" macbook air now, which i bring everywhere without its charger, since it's so light and the battery lasts long enough. when i've gotten somewhere and use it, though, i often wish i had more of everything: screen, resolution, cpu cores, ram, graphics, mass storage, ...
I'm a simple guy with simple computing needs, I guess? The Chromebook with Atom-based CPU is *almost* (but not quite) fast enough for me. For the most part I just need xterm+vim+browser.
bluet: where's your blog? i didn't know (or more likely, forgot) that you had a blog!
cs: any comments on the x270?
--
i'm still using my x220. it's pretty sluggish. spec summary:
= intel core i7 2640m, 8 gb ram
+ crucial 256 gb M550 msata ssd
+ samsung 256 gb 850pro sata ssd
( running 64-bit windows 7 and debian )
i'm eyeing the new macbook with an i7, 8 gb ram, and 256 gb ssd for $
1550 or so.
+ improved keyboard may be decent! i should go demo at the store.
+ the screen is perfect for me. i like 1080 px < hres < 4000 px.
+ size, weight, and battery life would all make the macbook pretty easy to pack!
- the solo usb-c is obnoxious as hell. i want gigabit ethernet, >1 usb ports, and dp/hdmi onboard.
so to get the connectivity i want, at home, i'd need...
1. a usb-c to (power + usb + hdmi)
adapter
2. a usb hub and gigabit ethernet
adapter
i guess that's only $125 extra. really kills the elegance on the desktop, though. and
in the office, i'd want the same setup, but i would just end up packing dongles around to save money.
i'd also want to buy a
yubikey 4c (usb-c). i'd probably just get an usb-c to usb adapter to save money. this is a bummer, because i really love my yubikey 4 nano and how it's not exposed when installed in a usb-a port.
if i got the extended warranty, the total would be about $2000. X[

I'm still an apple fanboy, sorry former thinkpad comrades. I miss my x301 sometimes but......
i've been doing some repairs on my x220, and i'm falling in love with it all over again
i wish i had kept my x60s. the aspect ratio made those so narrow! so cool looking imo. db, you still have it? :o i hope so! :)
i got my old x200s back from my dad when he upgraded to a macbook. glad to have it back!
i recommended an x-series for a friend to buy for his dad back in 2013 or so. it didn't work for his dad, so i bought it and gave it to my mom around that time. i got it back in 2019 when my mom died. it made me very sad because it was so slow (due to hdd swapping) that it was basically unusable. so i upgraded the ram, installed an ssd, and installed fresh win10. it works well enough, but i wish it had an beefier i7 (instead of the i5 that's in it) and a better keyboard (instead of the chiclets). gave it to nina, since her laptop is busted. i think she's happy enough with it
i think the long-term problem is going to be sourcing replacement batteries. lenovo has stopped producing batteries for the x220. i found a couple on ebay that were OEM new, but that means they were manufactured in like 2012 at the latest. batteries age, so it's not great to stockpile them. aftermarket batteries might be okay, but for how long will these manufacturers produce batteries for such old laptops?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Most batteries are just safely built 18650 battery arrays. We could always hack our own into being. :D
ok sounds good 8-)
