i'm thinking of switching to a custom dvorak layout:
1. standard dvorak simplified
2. make the caps lock key be a ctrl key
3. make the left ctrl key be a second backspace key
thoughts? :D

I've never seen a significant advantage of dvorak over qwerty.

1) Been using only Dvorak simplified for years now ... I think 2004-ish. I highly recommend it. Seems to limit finger reaching considerably; anecdotal, I know, so YMMV.
2) My favorite mod.

If I had more control over what keyboard I use / who uses my keyboard, I would probably have switched layout to Dvorak a long time ago. I hope it works out for you.
i used to touch type dvorak really well for quite a while. eventually i switched back to qwerty, as i needed to use random computer labs. since then (2005), i haven't relearned to touch type.
