i recently saw this blog post about not using air travel, primarily because of the carbon footprint.

but what are the alternatives for international travel? i started looking into sailing, but port calls and time at port is not very predictable. also, it's about $100/day--while reasonable for room and board, it makes for very costly travel. interesting, though:

tramp service from the great lakes to europe, 25 to 30 days, for $2000 - $3000 one-way.

we could coordinate a ttf group trip..!

not really. i like planes.

i'd like to think i have a pretty small carbon footprint (compared to other canadians, at least) as i don't have a car, i live in an energy efficient apartment, i live in ontario where there is no coal generation, and i take electric public transit (subway)

Nestor,

there is a footprint calculator. I did it. I don't own a car, at the time I only walked everywhere, but I think by virtue of living in Calgary my footprint was massive :(

Lucas,

I feel like I'm not going to be able to see and *really* explore/dig deep all of north america in my life time, hell I haven't even seen all the corners of the province that I live in or the one i was born in.

My romantic notion of travel has always been linked to work. I always thought it would be neat to be an expat doing work for some company overseas. I applied to work in Bermuda. I feel like it's a scam :/ ooops. Oh well, I'll keep trying.

could you sea kayak between Alaska and Russia? that would be rad.

i did it and flights basically make me above average (not sure if can avg or ontario avg)

hey, that's part of why i'm biking, although there will be at least one flight involved :(
