I don't know what I'm doing setting up ircd, so any help or tips would be appreciated :). I configured it to the best of my ability with the help of the comments in the config file, but I'm not confident I really know what I'm doing.
first easy question: how do I allow longer nicks? asemisldkfj gets shortened to asemisldk.

okay I took it down for now. I'd like to talk to someone who's run an IRC server before or read more about it myself before I leave it up unattended for any long periods of time.
which ircd did you use? i only have experience with unrealircd, but maxlor really likes his irc daemon.
I used the official ircd. it's in OpenBSD's ports, so it was the easiest.

ircd worked for me! I'd totally be in a #ttf ... once I get an IRC client installed.
I'm still a little weirded out by running ircd on my server just because it's the same box that does firewalling/routing. so basically it's IRC's reputation as not being very secure that's keeping me from wanting to do this very much. I might set up a separate box as my server soon, though.
we could also run ircd on our new server.
I made some nice progress getting the Soekris box set up as my router/firewall tonight, so I might have a dedicated server sooner than I think. feel free to set one up though!
